Super Falcons midfielder Deborah Abiodun has committed her future to Washington Spirit after signing a new two-year contract with the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) club.
The agreement will keep the 22-year-old Nigerian international at Washington Spirit until 2028 and includes a mutual option for an additional year.
Abiodun joined the American club from the University of Pittsburgh's Pittsburgh Panthers in January 2025. However, she moved to USL Super League side Dallas Trinity FC on loan the following month to gain further experience.
Her loan spell ended when Washington Spirit recalled the defensive midfielder on August 26, 2026, bringing her back into the club's plans.
Since arriving at Washington, Abiodun has made 21 appearances, contributing one goal and one assist. Her new deal offers continuity as she continues to develop her career in the United States.
The contract extension also provides Washington Spirit with the opportunity to retain a young midfielder who has already gained experience at club and international levels. The additional-year option could extend her stay beyond 2028, subject to both parties agreeing to activate it.
Abiodun's immediate focus, however, is on recovering from an injury sustained while representing the club. She is currently undergoing rehabilitation, although no specific date has been announced for her return to action.
Her recovery will be important as Washington Spirit look ahead to future fixtures and plan for the seasons covered by her new contract.
For the Nigerian midfielder, the extension represents an opportunity to continue her development in the NWSL while working towards a full return to fitness. She will hope to build on her existing appearances and make further contributions once she is available for selection.
The agreement secures Abiodun's future with Washington Spirit for at least two more years, with the possibility of an additional season depending on the mutual option.
