Inter Lagos FC have parted ways with head coach Shakiru Giwa following the club’s disappointing start to the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.
The newly promoted Lagos-based side confirmed Giwa’s departure in a statement, adding that the existing technical crew had also been dissolved as the club seeks to improve its performances in the top flight.
The decision marks a major change in the club’s technical department as Inter Lagos attempt to turn their early-season fortunes around and establish themselves in Nigeria’s top division.
Despite the separation, Inter Lagos acknowledged Giwa’s contribution to the club, particularly his role in securing promotion from the Nigeria National League (NNL) to the NPFL.
Giwa was appointed head coach in March 2025 and helped guide the team through its promotion campaign, earning Inter Lagos a place in the 2026/27 NPFL season. The achievement represented a significant milestone for the club, which had been working towards competing at the highest level of domestic league football.
However, the challenges of life in the NPFL have proved difficult for the newly promoted outfit, prompting the management to reconsider its technical leadership.
In its farewell message, the club expressed appreciation for Giwa’s dedication and commitment during his time in charge. Inter Lagos also recognised the importance of his role in securing promotion and wished him success in the next stage of his coaching career.
The dissolution of the technical crew indicates that the club’s changes will not be limited to the head coach position. Inter Lagos must now work towards assembling a new coaching team capable of improving results and helping the players adjust to the demands of top-flight football.
For newly promoted teams, adapting to the NPFL can be a demanding task, with clubs required to maintain consistency against more experienced opponents. Inter Lagos will therefore need to find the right technical leadership to improve their performances and collect valuable points as the campaign progresses.
Giwa’s departure also makes him the first managerial casualty of the 2026/27 NPFL season, according to the report, placing further attention on the club’s next appointment.
The management now faces the task of identifying a replacement who can provide stability, improve the team’s competitiveness and help the squad respond to its difficult start.
Inter Lagos will hope the changes create an opportunity for a fresh beginning as they continue their first campaign in the Nigerian top flight. While Giwa leaves following a challenging opening to the season, his contribution to the club’s promotion remains a notable part of his tenure.
The coming weeks will be important for Inter Lagos as they reorganise their technical department and seek the consistency needed to compete in the NPFL.
