NPFL 2025/2026: Rangers International Crowned Champions After Dramatic Title Race

Rangers International have emerged champions of the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season after a thrilling final-day victory over Ikorodu City.

The Flying Antelopes sealed the title with a hard-fought 2-1 win at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos, finishing the campaign with 68 points — just one point ahead of closest challengers Rivers United.

Captain Chidiebere Nwobodo proved to be the hero for the Enugu-based side, scoring a decisive brace to guide Rangers to their historic ninth NPFL title. The victory also sees Rangers equal Enyimba’s record as the joint-most successful club in Nigerian league history.

Rangers entered the final matchday knowing only a win would guarantee the title, with Rivers United pushing them all the way in one of the most competitive title races in recent seasons. Despite pressure from the home crowd and the significance of the occasion, Fidelis Ilechukwu’s men showed composure and resilience to secure the championship.

The first goal arrived in the 30th minute when Nwobodo fired Rangers ahead to calm nerves among the travelling supporters. The midfielder added his second shortly after the restart before Ikorodu City pulled one back to create late tension in Lagos.

However, Rangers held firm through the closing stages to complete a memorable triumph and cap off an impressive campaign under coach Fidelis Ilechukwu, who has now delivered another league title to the Coal City club.

Rivers United finished second after defeating Katsina United on the final day, while Shooting Stars secured third position in the league standings.

The title success guarantees Rangers International a place in next season’s CAF Champions League, where they will represent Nigeria alongside Rivers United.
