CAFCL: Ilechukwu Urges Rangers to Build on First-Leg Advantage Against MC Alger
Enugu Rangers technical adviser Fidelis Ilechukwu has urged his players to remain focused and maintain their intensity as they prepare for Friday's decisive CAF Champions League second-leg encounter against MC Alger in Algeria.
The Flying Antelopes secured a 2-0 victory over the Algerian side in the first leg of their second preliminary-round tie at the Moshood Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta on Sunday. However, Ilechukwu has warned that the result alone will not guarantee Rangers qualification for the group stage.
Rangers will travel to Algiers for the return fixture, knowing that they must produce another disciplined performance to protect their two-goal advantage and secure progress in the continental competition.
The Nigerian club's first-leg victory puts them in a strong position heading into the encounter, but Ilechukwu wants his players to approach the return leg with the right mentality rather than becoming complacent after their success at home.
The coach believes that thorough preparation, effective teamwork and proper adaptation to the conditions in Algeria will be crucial to achieving the desired result.
Speaking to 54footballx, Ilechukwu stressed that Rangers must move on from the first-leg victory and concentrate fully on the challenge ahead.
"We need to put the result behind us and go to the away game and attack and defend as a group," Ilechukwu told 54footballx.
His remarks underline the importance of maintaining a collective approach against MC Alger. Rather than relying solely on the advantage gained in Abeokuta, the Rangers technical adviser wants his players to remain organised in both attack and defence throughout the return encounter.
Ilechukwu also highlighted the importance of travelling early to give the team sufficient time to adjust before the match. He believes that arriving ahead of schedule would help the players adapt to their surroundings and improve their preparation for the demanding away fixture.
"We have to have a good preparation ahead of the game with early travel which is going to be at an advantage for us most especially for adaptation."
The coach's emphasis on early travel reflects his determination to ensure that Rangers are adequately prepared before taking on the Algerian side on their home ground. With qualification at stake, the team will need to approach the encounter with concentration and discipline from the opening whistle.
For Rangers, the challenge will be to balance their defensive responsibilities with the need to remain a threat going forward. Their two-goal cushion provides an advantage, but Ilechukwu's comments indicate that the team will not simply travel to Algeria to defend its lead without a collective plan.
MC Alger, meanwhile, will be looking to overturn the first-leg deficit and keep their Champions League campaign alive. The Algerians will need a strong performance in front of their supporters to recover from the defeat in Nigeria, making the second leg an important test for both teams.
The stakes are particularly high because the winner of the two-legged contest will earn a place in the group stage of the CAF Champions League. Progression would represent an important achievement for Rangers as they seek to advance further in Africa's premier club competition.
Ilechukwu will therefore be looking for his players to combine the confidence gained from Sunday's victory with the discipline required to complete the job away from home.
With Friday's encounter approaching, the Rangers technical adviser has made his message clear: the first-leg result must be put aside, preparations must begin early, and the entire team must work together to secure qualification.
