2026/27 EUROMATCH-NPFL: THE BIGGEST TALKING POINTS FROM MATCHDAY ONE

The 2026/27 EUROMATCH-NPFL season has started, and the opening matchday has already given us plenty to discuss.

There were impressive victories, late drama, disappointing results for some of the league's biggest clubs, and encouraging performances from the newly promoted sides.

It is still far too early to make major predictions, but Matchday One has provided some useful early indications of what could develop as the season progresses.

RIVERS UNITED START STRONGLY

Rivers United made one of the clearest statements of intent on the opening weekend.

The team that finished second behind champions Rangers last season began the new campaign with a convincing 2–0 victory over Plateau United at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.

Two goals, a clean sheet and three points represent an excellent start for a side hoping to challenge near the top of the table again.

The next test comes on September 6, when Rivers United travel to Katsina United.

SHOOTING STARS GET THE START THEY WANTED

Shooting Stars also began the season with three points, defeating Inter Lagos 2–1 at the Lekan Salami Stadium.

The victory ended a three-season wait for the club to win its opening match of an NPFL campaign

There was also an added challenge because Inter Lagos are among the new teams in the division and were making their first appearance in the NPFL.

Shooting Stars handled the occasion and secured an important victory.

Their next assignment, however, will be considerably more difficult, as they travel to Aba to face Enyimba on September 6.

RANGERS LEAVE ABEOKUTA WITH A POINT

The defending champions Rangers were unable to begin their title defence with a victory.

They were held to a 1–1 draw by Katsina United after Luis Dadong gave the visitors the lead in the 38th minute.

Katsina United looked on course for all three points until Chibueze Oputa scored in the 90+7th minute to rescue a point for Rangers.

The result also produced an interesting coincidence.

For the second consecutive season, the defending NPFL champions have opened their title defence in Abeokuta.

Last season, Remo Stars were forced to use the Abeokuta stadium because their home ground in Ikenne was undergoing renovation.

This season, Rangers are facing a similar situation, with their Enugu home also undergoing renovation.

So, two different champions have now started their title defences in Abeokuta in consecutive seasons, with renovation work responsible in both cases.

Rangers will now be looking to ensure that their unusual start does not lead to further dropped points.

ENYIMBA'S 50TH SEASON BEGINS ON THE WRONG NOTE

Enyimba entered the new campaign with a major milestone to celebrate.

The club is beginning its 50th season, making it a landmark campaign for one of the most decorated teams in Nigerian football.

But the opening result was disappointing.

Niger Tornadoes defeated Enyimba 2–1 in Minna, meaning the Aba side already has work to do.

Fortunately for Enyimba, the opportunity to respond comes quickly.

Shooting Stars will visit the Enyimba Stadium in Matchday Two, setting up one of the most interesting fixtures of the next round.

PROMOTED TEAMS SHOW THEY CAN COMPETE

The newly promoted clubs also provided plenty of encouragement during the opening weekend.

Inter Lagos suffered a narrow 2–1 defeat against Shooting Stars, but their performance suggested they will not be easy opponents.

Doma United made a particularly strong start by defeating Sporting Lagos 2–0.

Ranchers Bees also showed their potential against Ikorodu City, taking the lead before eventually losing 3–1.

There is still an entire season ahead, but the early evidence suggests the promoted sides are ready to compete rather than simply fight for survival.

BARAU FC RESPOND WELL TO PENALTY DISAPPOINTMENT

Barau FC began their campaign with a 3–1 victory over Nasarawa United.

However, the result could easily have gone differently.

The game was level at 1–1 when Joseph Atule stepped up to take a penalty in the 65th minute.

Nasarawa goalkeeper Olughu saved the effort.

Instead of allowing the missed penalty to affect them, Barau remained positive and continued searching for another breakthrough.

Their persistence paid off as they eventually scored twice more to secure a 3–1 victory.

The ability to recover from difficult moments could prove valuable as the season continues.

KWARA UNITED PRODUCE ONE OF THE ROUND'S BIGGEST COMEBACKS

Kano Pillars appeared to be in control after taking a 2–0 lead against Kwara United.

But the game changed completely after the interval.

Alex Jerry scored in the 47th minute to reduce the deficit.

Then, in the seventh minute of added time, he struck again to complete the comeback.

The final score was 2–2.

Kano Pillars will feel they allowed two points to slip away, while Kwara United will be delighted to have rescued a point.

The match also provided one of the earliest reminders of the season: teams cannot afford to relax before the final whistle.

WHAT TO WATCH IN MATCHDAY TWO

The second round of fixtures is scheduled for September 6, with several important matches on the programme.

ENYIMBA VS SHOOTING STARS

ENYIMBA STADIUM, ABA

Enyimba will be looking for an immediate response after losing their opening game.

Shooting Stars, meanwhile, will enter the match with confidence following their victory over Inter Lagos.

The contrasting opening results should make this a fascinating contest.

KATSINA UNITED VS RIVERS UNITED

Katsina United came very close to defeating the defending champions in the opening round.

Rivers United, meanwhile, started their campaign with a 2–0 victory over Plateau United.

Their meeting in Katsina will provide an early test of whether Rivers United can maintain their impressive form away from home.

NASARAWA UNITED VS BENDEL INSURANCE

Nasarawa United will be looking to recover from their 3–1 defeat to Barau FC.

Bendel Insurance arrive with confidence after coming from behind to defeat Warri Wolves.

Both sides will therefore be looking for a result that can help them build momentum.

For the teams that won on the opening weekend, the priority is to maintain their momentum.

For those that lost, the objective is simple: get points on the board.

One matchday cannot tell us exactly how the season will unfold.

But it has already given us several clues.

The next round will provide another opportunity to see which teams are building genuine momentum and which opening-day results may prove to be misleading.
